The garden is my sanctuary

During my childhood, I resided on a tract of twenty acres of land that had been acquired by my maternal grandmother, Emma Mead Harrell, in 1896. This land had been utilized for agricultural purposes long before my birth. It served as a site for farm activities and livestock raising, including chickens and hogs. The property was adorned with fruit trees, adding to its charm and utility. In their respective season, black walnut and pecan trees generously provided fresh nuts. I often reflect nostalgically on the times when I would pick blackberries to assist our mother in preparing her delectable blackberry dumplings. I cannot help but yearn for the simplicity and joy of those bygone days.

My mother frequently shared stories about her father, Jasper, and his life as a farmer. Unfortunately, I was only around two years old when my grandfather Jasper passed away, so I have no personal memories of him. During those long, hot summer days, my siblings and I worked alongside his brother, Palmer Harrell, who was also a farmer. We assisted him in planting and harvesting crops such as beans, potatoes, corn, and peas. As a result of this labor, we were fortunate to always have an abundance of fresh vegetables to eat. In fact, we were surrounded by planters and farmers in our community. Just across the pasture lived my Cousin Doris with her husband Henry Wheat  and family. Henry Wheat, cultivated a variety of vegetables and consistently shared their fresh produce with us. Those were the days of a bygone era, now long gone. Even today, when I tend to my garden, I often reflect on those times and the people who shaped them.

Farming has deeply shaped my perspective, instilling in me a profound appreciation for the art of gardening and the natural cycles that govern life. These traditions are not merely practices but are cherished elements of my identity, rooted in my heart. With each spring season, I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to plant and explore new methods of gardening, continually expanding my knowledge. A central goal of mine is to grow my garden with each passing season, enhancing it by incorporating touches of art and vintage items that lend it a unique character. The vibrant hues of the flowers not only beautify the space but also serve a vital ecological purpose, attracting butterflies and bees to the garden.

I am currently engaged in the process of harvesting mint tea for the purpose of preservation. Some of the mint is boiled to prepare a glass of fresh and delicious tea or a comforting cup of hot tea. As the tea boils, a refreshing aroma permeates the house, creating a pleasant atmosphere. All of my mint teas are organic, as the plants are grown without the use of pesticides. This practice not only ensures the quality of the tea but also provides me with peace of mind, knowing exactly what is entering my body. Mint tea is renowned for its numerous health benefits, as it can aid digestion, soothe an upset stomach, and alleviate headaches due to its calming properties. Also, it is rich in antioxidants, which are known to strengthen the immune system and contribute to overall well-being. Among the varieties of tea I enjoy, ginger, peppermint, turmeric, and jasmine stand out as my favorites. However, in truth, I find pleasure in drinking all types of tea.
